How to build credit by “borrowing” or piggybacking off of someone else

One of the very best ways to build credit is to have someone that has credit established, co-sign on a loan for you. What that means is you can have someone with a proven and good credit history sign on the dotted line next to yours,  you’ll be able to enjoy the same terms and interest rates that your co-signer would get on their own.  This works so well because you will be able to qualify for a loan that otherwise you might have been able to get without the co-signer.

As long as you make your payments on time on this loan, your credit score will improve over time and eventually you’ll be able to get a loan with the same great terms in your name only, as long as you manage your other lines of credit responsibly.  If you do default on the co-signed loan, you won’t be the only person that pays dearly for it. The co-signer also will be responsible and held accountable if the loan defaults.
